Yanedan : The Rebirth of a Village

DC280845Documentary

やねだん ~人口300人、ボーナスが出る集落~ [MBC]

|Length : 51min. |Year : 2008

This is the story of the rebirth of a village. Located far in the southwest of Japan, twelve years ago the village of Yanagidani (affectionately called "Yanedan") was a typical village in rural Japan. Its young people moved away and those who remained grew older. More than 40% of its 300 residents were over 65 years old and the village was in a state of decline.
When the village appointed Mr. Toyoshige to be its new village head -- and the people of Yanedan set out to re-build the community -- life began to change in unexpected ways. This is the story of how in practical and often creative ways the villagers brought a new life and vitality to their village, and without any help from the government.
This program is based on a close documentation of village life during the past five years, a story told using film footage, photographs, and interviews with the village head and the many old but active members of the community.
As a model of local revival, Yanedan has become famous throughout Japan.

Young players are revolutionizing the world of the shamisen. Having grown up with jazz, rock, and other modern music, they've developed new playing styles-sometimes even adapting guitar techniques-to dramatically expand the range of expression that's possible with the three-stringed instrument.
In "Young Masters of the Shamisen", we spend a month with three young players as they prepare for the 2006 national competition and gather in Hirosaki City to join the battle for the title.

Scientific is ScientiFUN – Denjiro Yonemura, Science Experiment Showman –

DC280643Documentary

科学は“科楽”だ ~実験先生・米村でんじろう~ [NHK]

|Length : 43min. |Year : 2006

Former high-school physics teacher Denjiro Yonemura is on a mission to get kids excited about science. He uses everyday objects to perform stunning feats such as making soap bubbles dance in the air using "hand power" (actually static electricity) and firing smoke rings dozens of metres through the air from a cardboard-box air cannon.
Denjiro is no comedian, no magician. He calls himself a "science producer". But recently, after 10 years of success, he found himself deeply disheartened because he wasn't able to come up with any new science experiments to perform.
We see Denjiro freshly encouraged by a boy who has become passionately curious about science since seeing one of his shows. Will Denjiro be able to recapture the magic and create new experiments to amaze, entertain, and educate the children who flock to see him turn scientific into scientiFUN?
